On Thursday, February 13th, PromoTurismoFVG and EGTC GO presented the feasibility study for the development of tourism and the enhancement of the historical and cultural heritage on the Italian side of Mount Sabotino at the GO! Centre in Gorizia. The study was prepared by Marco Pascoli, director of the Great War Museum in Ragogna, commissioned by PromoTurismoFVG and EGTC GO, partners in the Interreg ITA-SLO Walk of Peace+ and BeWoP projects.
The analysis is based on historical, environmental, and legal frameworks and proposes the necessary interventions to establish Sabotino as a destination for hikers and visitors. The focus is on preserving the heritage and integrating the area into the Walk of Peace, which already links the Slovenian side of Sabotino.
Planned activities within the BeWoP project include improving accessibility, protecting the military access road, and organizing the material and immaterial heritage related to World War I. Measures will also be taken to connect with the heritage in Slovenia and incorporate it into hiking trails.
The first set of activities to improve accessibility will be carried out by EGTC GO. This includes cleaning the roads, placing signs for Sabotino, and installing tourist panels that will represent the historical, cultural, and natural heritage. Two young local artists will create murals on the themes of war, peace, and the cross-border area.
The total value of the Walk of Peace+ project is €795,000, of which PromoTurismoFVG directly manages about €250,000. The project will be completed in September 2024. BeWoP has a total value of nearly €1.3 million, with EGTC GO managing €195,000. Project activities began in April 2024 and will end in October 2026.
Both projects are part of a broader European network aimed at promoting the values of peace and historical memory, and integrating the Walk of Peace into the cultural routes recognized by the Council of Europe. They are also important for encouraging cultural tourism linked to World War I sites and for developing sustainable tourism in the cross-border area.
