The Slovenian and Italian partners of the GRENNAT cross-border project: the Municipality of Nova Gorica, the Municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica, the Venezia Giulia Land Reclamation Board, the Veneto Orientale Land Reclamation Board and the Municipality of Monfalcone, under the leadership of the Municipality of Ajdovščina, organized an event for Vipava Day to showcase the importance of the development and management of green infrastructure, natural heritage, and sustainable development across the border.
The event was attended by a large number of children and young people, so the Vipava Day was held in a way that made it as easy as possible to show the cross-border importance of the Vipava River for the people and the environment of the cross-border area. Children and youngsters learnt about the rich river and riverside ecosystem, from the diverse species of fish to bats, in a fun and playful way. In addition, the project partners presented the results of the project activities in a child-friendly way: from the upgrading of fish paths, monitoring of fish and water status, setting up an information point, carrying out communication and didactic activities, to the development of an app, the setting up of didactic thematic trails, the development of conceptual designs for the landscaping and planting of the areas, conceptual solutions for the project documentation and the expert basis, and so on. Moreover, in order to illustrate the importance of the Vipava River and its habitats, especially fish, we visited the Ajdovščina fish farm under the expert guidance of the Slovenian Fishery Institute and the Ajdovščina Fishermen's Family. The fish farm is located on the Hubelj River, a tributary of the Vipava River. The Vipava Day event was held in two iterations in order to best present the content to a wider Italian and Slovenian speaking cross-border audience.
In this way, cross-border cooperation and the transfer of experience and good practices further prove to be a sustainable way to improve the protection and conservation of nature and biodiversity in cross-border areas.
