World Water Day 2025, established by the United Nations and celebrated every year on 22 March, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of water and the need for sustainable management of water resources.
To mark the occasion, on Friday 4 April 2025, from 9:30 to 13:00, a scientific conference entitled “Glacier Preservation” was held at the Parco delle Fonti di Torrate in Chions (PN), organised by Livenza Tagliamento Acque and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS, partner of the WABIN project.
On this occasion, it was also possible to highlight the progress and activities carried out within the Interreg Italy–Slovenia WABIN project, whose main objectives include the sustainable cross-border management of water resources and the development of innovative tools to safeguard ecosystems and local communities.
The initiative, aimed at professionals and experts, provided an important opportunity for discussion on the impact of climate change and the progressive melting of glaciers. This phenomenon, accelerated by global warming, is making the water cycle increasingly unpredictable and is heightening the risk of floods, droughts, landslides, and rising sea levels.
The connection between the Alpine glaciers and the Isonzo River, at the heart of WABIN’s monitoring and forecasting activities, was widely addressed during the debate, reaffirming the importance of sustainable and shared management of water resources in a cross-border perspective. In this context, WABIN confirms its role as a cross-border laboratory for studying, monitoring, and proposing concrete solutions to strengthen the resilience of territories and local communities.
