The Open Day of the Lokovec Forest Garden, featuring "Resin Tapping Theme Trail Experiences," is organized by the Municipality of Nova Gorica in collaboration with Slovenian associated partners of the MEDS GARDEN+ project: the Lokovec Local Community and the Lokovec Cultural Tourist Association.
28/06/2025, 15.00 - 18.00
Open Day Program:
3:00 PM - MEETING POINT: MEDS GARDEN+ project stand in front of the Heritage Center, Lokovec 82. Here, you'll find presentations of the educational gardens/allotments, Rafut Park, and the dispersed Lokovec Forest Garden. Afterwards, we'll DEPART (by own transport) for the PINE FOREST.
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM - PRESENTATION OF THE RESIN TAPPING THEME TRAIL and surrounding natural and cultural attractions. The pines in this forest were planted in the late 19th century on abandoned pastures. They were used for intensive resin tapping before and after World War II. After more than 50 years since resin tapping ceased, the extensive wounds on the trees have healed and merged with their trunks. Everyone perceives these scarred pines differently: as natural "living forms," totems, or forest guardians. The theme trail guides us through the history and techniques of resin tapping, its impact on the economy of surrounding farms, the abandonment of the practice, and the current situation. We'll be welcomed by a living museum of nature's wonders in a tranquil and relaxed setting, discovering the beauty and diversity of the plant world, gaining forest knowledge, and hearing new stories. We'll learn about the natural environment and actively experience the diversity and richness of the landscape. Interested participants can walk independently and at their own risk along a well-maintained, undemanding path that crosses an accessible part of the black pine forest.
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM - SREDNJI LOKOVEC - EVENT LOCATION "THE BLACKSMITH'S ECHO" – ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION "GREEN BRIDGE": Forest, Art, Heritage. The establishment of a dispersed Forest Garden forms the basis of a cultural and tourist product. Here, raising awareness and educating about the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity and natural, landscape, and gastronomic heritage are key elements for attracting visitors and creating value for the territory, while respecting cultural identity, the environment, and local communities. Forest gardens are long-term projects, and their development also contributes to changing the perception and relationship between stakeholders and their environment. What other elements promote the attractiveness of both smaller and larger areas? We'll collectively seek answers in a thematic workshop. In addition to cultural heritage, for greater inspiration, we'll also include gastronomic heritage along with modern artistic trends.
Bilingualism in Italian and Slovenian will be provided. The event is free of charge. Participants are kindly requested to register via the online form: https://forms.gle/LresVeJP8ga6ByNa8
The Technical Heritage Center will be open from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
