As part of the POSEIDONE project, the Capodistria Scientific Research Centre organised an event on 24 April 2025 entitled ‘Presentation of the pilot plant for local genetic resources set up as part of the POSEIDONE project and workshop on local olive varieties’.

The first part of the event was dedicated to presenting the importance of biodiversity and agrobiodiversity conservation. Participants were able to learn about different local olive varieties and genotypes present in the pilot olive grove and understand their importance not only from an agricultural and scientific point of view, but also for local identity, rural development, tourism and the promotion of the territory. The impact of climate change on olive growing was also highlighted and possible adaptation measures to reduce the negative effects of the new production conditions were presented. In the second part of the event, Rok Babič from the Public Service for Olive Growing illustrated modern technologies for processing olives into olive oil and led a workshop on sensory analysis.
Participants learned the basics of sensory analysis of olive oil and table olives and had the opportunity to taste some oils and table olives from local varieties. Due to bad weather, the event took place at the Karjola inn in Marezige, near Koper.
