On Monday, 14 July 2025, at the Eda Center in Nova Gorica, the inaugural event of the HeatIslands Adapt project took place, officially marking the launch of activities within the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia 2021–2027 Programme.

The event began with a press conference, during which the six project partners presented the main objectives, planned activities, and expected results. Participants were also welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Nova Gorica, Mr. Tomaž Horvat. The meeting was attended by representatives of associated partners, sector experts, and interested citizens.

The HeatIslands Adapt project addresses one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing modern cities: the phenomenon of urban heat islands and the resulting heat stress. Its goal is to strengthen the resilience of urban centers and improve the preparedness of the population for extreme weather events, particularly heatwaves.

The main objectives of the project include:

  • identifying the most vulnerable urban areas through climate projections and advanced modelling,

  • establishing a cross-border heatwave early warning system, based on strengthened cooperation between ARSO and ARPA FVG,

  • developing a joint action plan for the adaptation of the built urban environment, including measures such as greening, building cooling, energy retrofitting, and the integration of ecosystem services,

  • promotional and training activities targeted at specific groups.

The afternoon was dedicated to an internal meeting between the partners, during which the tasks of the individual work packages, the management plan, and communication activities were presented. The first meeting of the steering committee was also held. Special attention was given to the Nova Gorica–Gorizia pilot area, where specific analyses will be carried out and adaptation measures implemented to mitigate the effects of heatwaves.
