On 9 December 2025, the second local event presenting the MARE SUPERUM project took place in Portorož, focusing on the integration of tourism, maritime heritage, and culture along the Slovenian coast. The event was organized by the Regional Development Centre Koper (Regionalni razvojni center Koper), in collaboration with the Slovenian project partners – the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport and the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum in Piran.
The meeting brought together local stakeholders active in tourism, maritime and nautical tourism, and culture within the coastal area. Project partners presented the objectives and main activities of MARE SUPERUM, highlighting concrete ways in which local operators and institutions can integrate project contents into their activities and development initiatives.
The discussion focused particularly on identifying the potential of the maritime and marine heritage of Portorož, Piran, and the wider coastal area, and exploring ways to sustainably integrate this heritage into contemporary tourism products. The central role of local communities and stakeholders in co-creating content based on the authenticity of the area, local knowledge, and local stories was emphasized, avoiding simplification or commercialization of local identity.
Participants highlighted that the MARE SUPERUM project opens up new opportunities to enhance the existing tourism offer and to strengthen collaboration between cultural institutions, educational entities, and tourism operators. This approach contributes to the development of sustainable tourism, generating added value for the local community while preserving the natural and cultural characteristics of the coastal area.
The MARE SUPERUM project, co-financed by the Interreg Italy–Slovenia Programme, aims to develop a common cross-border tourism product that valorizes the maritime heritage of the Northern Adriatic and fosters cooperation among public institutions, development organizations, research institutes, and local communities.
The Portorož event represents an important step in transferring project activities into local practice and in strengthening collaboration between project partners and stakeholders in the Slovenian coastal region.
