EXPERIMENTAL WINES TASTING

On Thursday, May 8th, 2025 at 11:00 AM, an Italian tasting of experimental wines from the 2024 vintage will take place at Villa Nachini Cabassi in Corno di Rosazzo (UD), the headquarters of project partner Consorzio Tutela Vini Friuli Colli Orientali e Ramandolo. The event is part of the capitalisation initiative of the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia 2021–2027 Programme, under the project titled IRRIGAVIT – Rational Irrigation and Soil Management in Cross-border Viticulture. This will be the second Italian tasting of experimental wines and the third overall scheduled by the project. It will involve a panel of tasters representing the project’s target focus group, including wine producers, oenologists, and sector experts.A total of 8 wines will be evaluated, produced under different irrigation trials conducted in the experimental vineyard in Pantianicco (Beano di Codroipo). The wines—Pinot Grigio (still) and Glera (lightly sparkling)—were produced under four different irrigation strategies:

  • 1 irrigated control;
     2 mild water deficit;
    3 moderate water deficit;
    4 severe water deficit.

The irrigation levels were based on the water status of the vines, following the recommendations provided by the DSS Vintel decision support system used in the project.“The tasting has been organised by the Consortium, one of the project partners. The irrigation trials were carried out by university researchers,” notes Mariano Paladin, Director of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Friuli Colli Orientali e Ramandolo and Communication Manager for the project.

VISIT TO THE COVER CROPS TRIAL

On the same day, before the wine tasting, attendees will have the opportunity to visit the demonstration trial on vineyard covercrops at Azienda Agricola Specogna, via Rocca Bernarda 4, Corno di Rosazzo (UD). The visit will take place from 10:00 to 10:45 AM and will include a brief presentation by university researchers on the grassing trial and the vineyard sensors installed as part of the IRRIGAVIT project.
In case of rain, participants should go directly to Villa Nachini Cabassi at the scheduled time for the tasting.

The project, which began on October 1st, 2024, is coordinated by the University of Udine (Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Animal Sciences – Di4A) in cooperation with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia (Kmetijski Inštitut Slovenije), and the Geodetic Institute of Slovenia. These partners had already worked together on the previous ACQUAVITIS project (“Innovative Solutions for Efficient Water Use in Cross-border Viticulture”), now joined by two new partners: RRA SEVERNE PRIMORSKE d.o.o. Nova Gorica and Consorzio Tutela Vini Friuli Colli Orientali e Ramandolo. “Viticulture in the cross-border area is facing increasing challenges due to climate change and drought, which can negatively impact both the quality and quantity of grapes. In the previous ACQUAVITIS project, we implemented green technologies and developed innovative irrigation and soil management protocols with an ecosystem-based approach, targeting three key wine regions: Vipava Valley, Karst, and Lower Friuli,” explains Prof. Paolo Sivilotti of the University of Udine, the project’s Scientific Coordinator.

IRRIGAVIT now aims to refine and transfer these resilience strategies to new priority areas—Colli Orientali and Brda—to provide technical support for climate adaptation to policy-makers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The ultimate goal is to develop new guidelines for viticulturists, applicable both in the cross-border region and beyond, and present them at the final conference scheduled for November, once again at Villa Nachini.
