Project summary

Policy objective: PO2 – A greener, low-carbon transitioning towards a net zero carbon economy and resilient Europe by promoting clean and fair energy transition, green and blue investment, the circular economy, climate change mitigation and adaptation and risk prevention and management

Specific objective: SO6 – Promoting the transition to a circular and resource efficient economy

Typology: capitalisation project

The RECREATE project has taken up the challenge of the Programme Area related to the transition towards a circular economy and has proposed a circular economy model for fiber-reinforced composite materials (CFR), aimed at improving the environmental sustainability of the Programme Area by reducing the amount of waste produced and enhancing the management of CFR waste present in the Programme Area.

Objectives

The project capitalised on some of the strategic results of the Retracking project by proposing a recycling methodology capable of introducing new products made of recycled CFR material into the economic system. The circular economy model was tested by two actors belonging to the value chain: a public authority and a company using CFR.

  • The public authority and the private company collected their own CFR waste, selecting and preparing it for recycling.

  • The waste collection involved the citizens of the municipality and the staff of the private company. Guidelines were defined for the proper management of CFR waste in the Programme Area, which can be used by additional waste management companies.

  • The waste was recycled and new products made of recycled CFR material were produced; these were certified and installed in the municipality’s public spaces and integrated into the company’s production process.

  • Protocols were developed for the acquisition of CFR products by public bodies and companies in the Programme Area, in compliance with Italian and Slovenian legislation.

Output

Demonstrate the feasibility of the circular economy model and the possibility of its application in Italian and Slovenian public and private contexts.
